Newspaper: Criminal gangs attack Haiti’s interim prime minister’s motorcade

The newspaper, which published a video of the incident, stressed that Connell himself was not injured during the attack.

According to the newspaper, the attack was carried out when Conille was about to leave the General University Hospital in Port-au-Prince, where he had arrived without an appointment. According to eyewitnesses, police officers and journalists were unable to leave the hospital building for some time due to gunfire outside. The gangs then clashed with Haitian police and Kenyan peacekeepers in the street.

The newspaper indicated that the interim prime minister’s motorcade left the scene of the incident, and Conille himself was not injured, but the situation remained tense throughout the day in Port-au-Prince, whose center is now controlled by armed groups.

In late May, Conille was appointed interim prime minister, and a transitional government was appointed in early June. Conille briefly led the country more than a decade ago, and his last post was as the former regional director of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

The process of transferring the Kenyan peacekeeping contingent to Haiti began at the end of June.

On June 25, 400 police officers from Kenya arrived in Port-au-Prince, to assist local police in operations against criminal gangs that control large parts of the country.

It is noteworthy that Haiti has been witnessing a wave of unrest and violence for many months, as armed gangs control about 90% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and some areas of the country.
