Press Freedom Index: Increasing interference by authorities

The report also expresses concern over the misuse of artificial intelligence: ‘In the absence of laws, the use of generative AI to generate fake news for political purposes is a cause for concern. Deepfakes now play an important role in influencing elections. This is evidenced by the audio deepfake of journalist Monika Todova during parliamentary elections in Slovakia, one of the first documented cases of such an attack on a journalist with the aim of influencing the outcome of a democratic election.’

Global ranking

As expected, Scandinavian countries lead the world in this ranking. In the report, Norway ranked first worldwide for freedom of expression, with Denmark second and Sweden third.

In the United States, freedom of journalists has also been restricted in the past year, falling ten places from 45th to 55th.

However, the condition of England has improved by three levels.

Pakistan’s ranking has fallen by two places compared to last year and Pakistan is at the 152nd position. The same is the case with India and it has also dropped two ranks to 161st place in the 2023 competition.

But our western neighbor’s position has fallen further and has gone from 152 to 178.

But Syria and Eritrea are even lower, at 179 and 180, respectively.

Iran is at 176th and China at 172nd.
