A popular and well-visited restaurant in the garden in the fishing town, which in the past month alone has had more than 5,000 diners.
Nevertheless, the 61-year-old businessman Søren Madsen is now throwing in the towel. Among other things, on the advice of his daughters, who have seen him work almost around the clock for many months.
And the man, who also runs a business in his home town of Aarhus, can’t take it anymore either, he writes in a post on the bistro’s Facebook page, where he announces that the bistro will have the last opening day with him behind the counter on Saturday 31 August.
– To have companies in Aarhus and then at the same time have to be here as much as is required, unfortunately I do not like that. And yes, it is unfortunately necessary, as this industry more than others needs management, control, control and hands-on than any other industry I have been in, says Søren Madsen.
It annoys him that it has now come this far, he states behind the wheel of his car on the way home to Aarhus.
– I’m actually sitting and crying. With both eyes, he says to Nordjuyske.
While the bistro on the quay in the fishing town has garnered fantastic reviews on tripadvisor, where for more than a year it has been the undisputed number one among 854 North Jutland eateries, hosted top politicians from the Nordic Council, city kids and even “foodies” who have traveled all the way from Dallas for to taste whether the good reviews can now really fit, then there is something else that is the reason why Søren Madsen is now throwing in the towel.
– It is simply too difficult to get stable staff, he says.
On Tuesday, he was suddenly missing two cooks who just never showed up. Then it becomes difficult to service the many guests that the place has.
– Our wonderful servants must either study or travel, the other young people must go to school or gymnasium. It is unsustainable and means that everyday life cannot be put together, explains Søren Madsen.
According to Søren Madsen, the first year as a bistro owner resulted in a deficit of DKK 775,000 – while hard work this year means that the accounts break even.
– This makes it difficult to invest and continue, writes Søren Madsen and regrets that he has to give up making all the plans for the place and the surroundings he had a reality.
– However, I wish the very best for both Strandby Harbor and the city. It is wonderful here, writes Søren Madsen and thanks both guests and staff for a – after all – wonderful time at the harbor in Strandby.
The soon-to-be former bistro owner owns the buildings on the harbor in which Mimis Bistro is located, and Søren Madsen states that he is trying to find a tenant or buyer who will continue to run the bistro until August 31.
