Council debates future of Olaya Herrera airport

Currently the Olaya Herrera Airport Medellín has two alternatives for its transfer, one located in the Valle de Ovejas in San Pedro de los Milagros with 72% viability and in the Tonusco sector in Santa Fe de Antioquia with 68% viability.

The manager of the Olaya Herrera airport, Doris Montoya He commented that: “The distance from Medellin to Ovejas is 22 km, But obviously we have to keep in mind that there is no road development to reach this site.”

In this sense, building the new airport would require 6.6 billion pesosto make way for a 2,600-meter runway, with the possibility of expanding to 3,500 meters, depending on demand, with a regional aviation capacity of between 40 and 70 passengers and international commercial aviation of up to 180 passengers in San Pedro de los Milagros.

Similarly, Montoya called for a more in-depth study of the possible transfer of the Olaya: “This issue must be analyzed in the full range of impacts it may have on the city and the country; therefore, it is not such an easy decision to make.”

In any case, the transfer of these operations from the Olaya Herrera airport can only be carried out prior to the construction of the second runway in the Jose Maria Cordova Airport from Rionegro.
