Not only the rain that ruined the organizers’ plans and soaked President Sergio Mattarella (while Emmanuel Macron was dry), the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics is also being discussed for its content and tone. Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini does not mince his words when he posted on social media an image of a moment of the ceremony that, instead of taking place in the stadium as usual, took place outdoors, along the Seine. “Opening the Olympics by insulting billions of Christians in the world was a really bad start, dear French. Squalid”, is the attack of the minister and leader of the League on the inauguration of the Olympic Games yesterday. Salvini showed a photo comparing the inauguration DJ set with Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper, which the performance seems to be inspired by.
The reference is to the moment of the inauguration in which on a table reminiscent of the one of the Last Supper colorful characters dance and celebrate, scenes that have outraged many social media users and observers. “The left would not dare to try to anger Islam in France” but “openly mocks the Last Supper with a sick parody of drag queens at the Olympics”, reads one of the most shared posts on X.
