Prince Michael of Greece has died

Prince Michael of Greece and Denmark, a renowned historian who remained in Greece during the dictatorship of the colonels, died on Sunday at the age of 85, the Greek press reported.

The prince, the last surviving grandson of King George I of Greece, who was assassinated in 1913, died in hospital in Athens, the newspaper’s website reported. Kathimerini.

After his father died when he was one year old, the prince grew up in Morocco and Spain, before continuing his studies in France.

Prince Michael was the only member of the royal family to remain in the country after King Constantine II attempted a counter-coup in 1967 against the colonels who had seized power a few months earlier. After the failed counter-coup, the king went into exile. The dictatorship did not end until 1974.

Prince Michael published dozens of works after 1970, combining historical knowledge and writing talent.

He focused on historical subjects, from Greece to the Ottoman Empire, and wrote biographies of members of royal families.
