The Ecuadorian government denounced on July 29 that there was a “lack of transparency” in the results of the Venezuelan presidential elections of July 28, in which Nicolás Maduro was proclaimed re-elected by the National Electoral Council (CNE) as president for a third consecutive term.

“The lack of guarantees in the process of publishing results that reflect the will of the Venezuelan people delegitimizes and vitiates the results of the elections,” the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on social media.

The organization called on the international community to ensure that Venezuelan authorities fully and transparently verify the elections, with the participation of impartial international observers.

For his part, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa supported the statements of his country’s Foreign Ministry. He reported that his government asked the public entity to take the necessary steps to convene the Permanent Council of the OAS and address the situation in Venezuela.

“There are politicians throughout the region who are trying to cling to power and who are trying to rob our citizens of peace. That is what we are facing, that is the danger of the dictatorship, and today we are witnessing how one more of them is trying to rob millions of Venezuelans of hope,” Noboa said in a post on X on July 29.

Venezuelan presidential election results

According to the first CNE report, Maduro was re-elected for a third consecutive term with 51.2% of the votes (5,150,092), while Edmundo González Urrutia, candidate of the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD), obtained 44.2% of the votes (4,445,978).

Reactions from other Latin American countries

Several representatives of Latin American governments have spoken out against the results of the Venezuelan presidential elections.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric questioned the credibility of the election results delivered by the CNE.

“The international community and especially the Venezuelan people demand total transparency of the minutes and the process, and that international observers not compromised with the government account for the veracity of the results,” Boric wrote on his X account.

Brazil announced that it will refrain from recognizing Nicolás Maduro’s victory until the result is verifiable. He asked international organizations to investigate and compare the results documented by the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD).

Luis Lacalle Pou, president of Uruguay, considered that The mechanisms to achieve Nicolás Maduro’s victory were not reliable.

“The process up to the day of the election and the counting of votes was clearly flawed. You cannot recognize a victory if you do not trust the way and the mechanisms used to achieve it,” the Uruguayan president wrote on his X account on July 29.

For its part, the Peruvian government recalled its ambassador to Venezuela for consultations, and the CNE proclaimed Maduro the winner of the elections on July 29.
