Katherine Paredes lost her fencing debut to Hungarian Anna Marton, with a score of 10-15 in the first round of sabre competition.
Paredes, 26, became the second Venezuelan to compete in fencing at the Olympic Games, after Alejandra Benítez, who competed in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.
Another athlete who made his debut was Leonel Martínez. In his participation he finished in 24th place, after three rounds.
Martínez, 60 years old, returned to compete in the Olympic Games after 40 years, when he participated in the 1984 edition of Los Angeles (California, United States).
Finally, swimmer Alfonso Mestre competed in the 800-meter category. The athlete finished in eighth place, with a time of 08:12:03.
At the end of the competition, Mestre, 24 years old, was in 29th place and had no chance of advancing to the Olympic Games.
