Mikati: Our contacts continue internationally and Arab to ward off dangers from Lebanon

Beirut – Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati stated yesterday, Sunday, that contacts are continuing internationally and Arab-wise to “protect Lebanon and ward off Israeli threats.”

This came in a statement issued by the Lebanese Prime Minister’s Office, which indicated that Mikati had made a series of diplomatic and political contacts in the context of following up on the urgent and emerging situations and the repeated Israeli threats against Lebanon.

The level of Israeli threats to launch a large-scale war on Lebanon has increased following a missile attack that targeted the Druze town of Majdal Shams in the occupied Golan, while the Lebanese factions denied responsibility for the attack that led to the killing and wounding of 30 people.

Mikati stressed during the calls that “the solution lies in reaching a comprehensive ceasefire and fully implementing international resolution 1701, to get rid of the useless cycle of violence and not to be dragged into escalation that further complicates the situation and leads to undesirable consequences,” according to the same statement.

On August 11, 2006, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1701, calling for a complete cessation of hostilities between Lebanon and Israel, and for the creation of an area between the Blue Line (the border between Lebanon and Israel) and the Litani River in southern Lebanon, free of any armed men, military equipment and weapons, except those belonging to the Lebanese Armed Forces and the UNIFIL forces.

Mikati also reiterated the government’s position of condemning all forms of violence against civilians, and that “a sustainable ceasefire on all fronts is the only possible solution to prevent further human losses and to avoid further deterioration of the situation on the ground.”

He added, “The Lebanese position is understood by all of Lebanon’s friends, and contacts are continuing in more than one international, European and Arab direction to protect Lebanon and ward off dangers from it.”
