Paris Olympics.. French swimmer Marchand sets new Olympic record

France – French swimmer Leon Marchand set a new Olympic record on Sunday during his participation in the men’s 400-meter medley swimming race at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, winning the gold medal for the race.

Marchand, 22, who won his first Olympic medal, clocked 4:02.95 minutes, breaking the Olympic record of 4:03.84 set by American legend Michael Phelps in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Marchand was 5.67 seconds ahead of Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita, who won silver, while the bronze went to American Carson Foster, who was 5.71 seconds behind.

Since the Tokyo Olympics, Marchand has won four world titles in medley swimming (200m and 400m in 2022 and 2023) and a title in the 200m butterfly last year.

The race was held in the absence of the defending champion, the American Chase Kalis, who failed to qualify for the final, after finishing 11th in the heats, two seconds behind the qualifying time.

Kallis was not the only absentee from the race, as the Tokyo bronze medalist, Australian Brendon Smith, also failed to qualify after finishing 13th in the qualifiers, while another American, Jay Laitherland, who won silver three years ago, did not pass the trials to select the national team participating in Paris 2024.
