Milei continues wave of layoffs and dismantling of the State

The Argentine government is considering dissolving around 60 state agencies. The decision, which would be carried out through one or a series of decrees, is part of the plans of the Ministry of Deregulation and Transformation of the State.

The Government has not yet defined the date on which the new rules will begin to come to light. “There is a political decision to move forward, but neither the work plan nor the list of organizations has been defined,” said Casa Rosada officials.

The wave of dissolutions of organizations, as confirmed by the Government, must take place within the next 12 months. That is the term of the extraordinary powers granted to President Javier Milei to sign these decrees.

The delegation enables him to “modify or eliminate powers and functions,” without going through the National Congress. This is one of the powers granted to it by the Bases Law, whose promulgation took place on July 8. Therefore, the deadline is a priority in management.

Among the first organizations that the Government will target is the National Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism (Inadi), whose closure was announced in February, but has not yet been implemented. The list also includes the National Institute of Indigenous Affairs (INAI) and the National Youth Institute (Injuve), among others.

According to different sources, the idea of moving forward with the closures is in line with the decision to reduce the volume of the State, without going through Congress, and to move forward with reducing the number of public plant employees.

Regarding the fate of thousands of employees, the government has said that they will have to look for another job, but at the moment there are no employment generation policies.

Milei’s obsession with dismantling the State threatens to take everything in its path, a situation that the ruler has made no secret of publicly enjoying.

With the changes in the Base Law, the following organizations were out of reach of the Government: CONICET, ANMAT, ANLIS, CNEA, CONAE, INCUCAI, INTA and SENASA, among others. The opposition shielded them during the debate in Congress so that they cannot be reduced or eliminated.
