The National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) opened a Public Consultation on Monday (29) to discuss the use of the 6 GHz band. Specifically, the measure would allow Wi-Fi equipment — which is currently allowed to operate between 5,925 MHz and 7,125 MHz — to have full use limited to the range between 5.925 MHz to 6.425 MHz.

With the change, the upper part of the band, from 6,425 MHz to 7,125 MHz, could be used in the future for other radio frequency services, such as mobile telephony. Currently, the band in question is used by Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, which rely on the additional spectrum to reduce congestion of connected devices.

Public Consultation No. 29, which addresses the issue, does not aim to restrict the entire 700 MHz portion of the band from being used for Wi-Fi, as explained by Viníncius Caram, Superintendent of Grants, to Tele.Sintese. Instead, it establishes rules for its coexistence with the Personal Mobile Service (SMP).

This means that unlicensed wireless technology will still be able to use the 1,200 MHz of the 6 GHz band — especially in regions where mobile phone signal is not present.

Some equipment approved on the national market has support for remote firmware updates, therefore, they will not need to be replaced and can be easily adjusted to operate under rules defined by location.

Caram emphasizes that the measure will not prevent the expansion of internet providers. “We are not extinguishing anything that has already been decided, but creating rules for coexistence.” The consultation will remain open until August 6.

It is worth noting that this is a measure that is being debated worldwide. Carlos Baigorri, president of Anatel, had previously commented on the possibility of “reevaluating” the use of the 6 GHz band in Brazil. The country even entered a list of nations that were willing to “share” the band between cellular telephony and Wi-Fi.
