The Taliban government prevented 30 female students who received scholarships to study in the UAE from going to the UAE on scholarship.
According to the international news agency, 22-year-old student Laila told AFP that 30 students, including me, were sponsored for higher education by Khalaf Ahmed Al-Habtoor, a businessman from the United Arab Emirates.
Laila further said that we all went to the airport to leave for the United Arab Emirates but were stopped from boarding by male Taliban officials. We also showed them our visas but all proved futile.
Speaking to AFP, Laila further said that her dream of pursuing a higher law degree from Dubai was shattered.
The founding chairman of Al Habtoor, a scholarship company, criticized the Taliban on Twitter for preventing female students from going to the United Arab Emirates for higher education.
The founding chairman further wrote on Twitter that about 100 women were awarded scholarships with the support of Dubai University and Al Habtoor staff had worked on it for months. International organizations and global powers should use their influence to allow female students to study.
Human Rights Watch also expressed concern over the Taliban’s move to prevent female students from going abroad for higher education, saying that blocking education opportunities for girls should be avoided.
The Taliban government did not immediately respond to AFP’s request for comment on the matter.
Remember that since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan on August 15, 2021, women’s jobs and girls’ education in high school and university have been banned.
