Pope Francis calls for “Olympic truce” in all armed conflicts

Pope Francis again urged this Thursday for “the Olympic truce” in the armed conflicts ravaging the world on the eve of the start of the Paris Olympic Games.

“While peace in the world is seriously threatened, I sincerely hope that everyone respects the #Olympic Truce, in the hope of resolving conflicts and restoring harmony,” the pope appealed through his official account on the social network X.

“May God enlighten the consciences of those in power,” added Francis, who has previously requested on several occasions that a ceasefire be established in conflicts during the duration of the Paris Olympic Games that begin tomorrow.

This past Sunday, at the end of the Angelus prayer, the pontiff remarked that “according to ancient tradition,” the games were “an opportunity to establish a truce in wars.”

He also assured that “sport has a great social force, capable of peacefully uniting people from different cultures.”

The appeal for a truce during the games has also been made by the United Nations.

In turn, French President Emmanuel Macron advocated on Monday that the Olympic Games mean a period of “truce.”

“The Games will be at the center of the country’s life and the world will be in France thanks to them,” Macron stressed to justify this truce in statements to the press.
