Florida Driver’s License Changes Starting July 31 2024-07-29 09:48:00

There are only a few hours left before the state of Florida implements new changes related to driver’s licenses, as the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) reminds us.

The agency will implement legislation amending Florida Statute 322.14(1)(a) to require that the distinctive numbers assigned to a driver’s license or identification card include at least four randomly generated digits.

According to the FLHSMV, this new system aims to improve security and safeguard people’s identity. However, the format of the license or identification card will remain the same. The novelty is that, starting July 31, a different formula will be used to determine driver’s license numbers.

New driver’s license number

FLHSMV further explained that customers who renew or replace their license or identification card in person or online will be issued a new number. Those applying for a license or identification card for the first time will be issued a card that meets the new legal requirements.

Once the new number has been issued, it will only change again if the customer’s last name changes. Any new credential, printed report, or receipt will show the newly generated driver’s license or ID number.

FLHSMV offers a fast and convenient way to renew your driver license or ID card online. If you are eligible, you can use the MyDMV Portal. Remember, you must visit an office under the following circumstances:

-If you used the online convenience service in your last renewal.

-If you do not comply with REAL ID.

-If you want to update your photo.

-If you change your name using a court order or original or certified marriage certificate.

-If you wish to add or remove a designation or have a court order to update your credential.

-If you are getting a Florida driver’s license or ID card for the first time.

-If you have a commercial driver’s license.

-If the license has the word “TEMPORARY” printed on it.
