- The Peruvian foreign minister condemned the irregularities recorded during the presidential elections of July 28
Peru announced in the early hours of July 29 that it will recall its ambassador to Venezuela for consultations, after the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed as winner of the presidential elections to the current president Nicolás Maduro.
“In light of the very serious official announcements by the Venezuelan electoral authorities, the immediate recall of the Peruvian ambassador accredited to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has been arranged,” Peruvian Foreign Minister Javier González-Olaechea posted on his social media account X.
González-Olaechea, assured that his country will not accept the violation of the popular will of the Venezuelan people in the presidential elections of July 28, minutes after the CNE announcement.
“I condemn in all its extremes the sum of irregularities with the intention of defrauding by the Venezuelan government. Peru will not accept this violation of the popular will,” González-Olaechea wrote.
Pre-results warning
Before the results were known, the Peruvian Foreign Minister, together with his counterparts from Uruguay, Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama and Paraguay, had issued a joint statement expressing their concern and announcing that, together with the rest of the country, they will closely monitor the electoral events in Venezuela.
The message stressed the importance of ensuring that the election results faithfully reflect the popular will expressed by the Venezuelan people at the polls.
“We consider it essential to have guarantees that the election results will fully respect the popular will expressed by the Venezuelan people at the polls,” the text stated.
CNE announcement
According to the first CNE bulletin, Maduro was re-elected for a third consecutive term after obtaining 51.20% of the votes.
The head of the electoral body, Elvis Amoroso, who announced the data more than six hours after the closing of the polling stations, said that the result provided corresponds to the counting of 80% of the votes cast in the elections of July 28, which had a massive turnout of voters throughout the day.
According to the first report, the candidate of the majority opposition, Edmundo González Urrutia, obtained 4,445,978 votes, which represents 44.2% of the votes.
Before announcing the results, the president of the CNE assured that the data transmission system suffered an attack, which will be investigated, which is why – he explained – the announcement of the winner took longer than expected, although he did not give further details on the matter.
Opposition statement
The opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado, spoke out from the Campaign Command With Venezuela to express its rejection of the results issued by the National Electoral Council (CNE).
“Venezuela has a new president-elect and it is Edmundo González Urrutia. We won and everyone knows it,” Machado said.
He added that they have more than 40% of the records that reflect the victory of the opposition candidate.
“We have 100% of the records issued by the CNE. All the information agrees that Edmundo González Urrutia obtained 70% of the votes,” said Machado.
Opposition candidate Edmundo González Urrutia accompanied the opposition leader in her speech.
“Venezuelans know what happened in today’s election, all the rules were violated to the point that not all the voting records have been delivered yet,” said González Urrutia.
