Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Pilar Regional Hospital received high-end colposcopy equipment, worth G. 45 million, in order to determine early the lesions produced by the Human Papillomavirus, reported the Ministry of Public Health.

This investment was achieved through efforts made by the Directorate of the Ñeembucú Health Region, with the heads of Health Programs, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Obstetrics and the National Cancer Control Program (PRONAC).

Colposcopy examinations at the Pilar Regional Hospital are performed on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the morning, from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and on Thursdays in the afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with prior appointment.

The biomedical equipment is a tool that allows specific studies to be carried out to detect cervical cancer in time. Its main function is to determine early lesions caused by HPV, and other benign lesions in the lower female genital tract.

According to the data, four out of five people contract HPV. The vast majority do not know they have it, and not being aware can cause different types of cancer, such as cervical cancer. Colposcopy also looks for other medical conditions, such as genital warts or noncancerous growths called polyps, the health ministry reported.
