Guatemalan cyclist Sergio Chumil makes history at the Tour of Portugal

The cyclist wins the third stage of the Tour of Portugal and is the first Guatemalan to do so.

The Guatemalan Sergio Chumil, corridor of the Burgos-BH Spanish, won this Saturday, July 27, in the third stage of the Volta a Portugal, which is now led by the Portuguese Afonso Eulálio (ABTF Betão-Feirense).

Chumil overtook Eulálio in the final metres before the finish line and completed the 161.2 kilometres between the town of Crato (on the Alentejo border) and Alto da Torre, in the Serra da Estrela (Centro Region), in 4 hours, 4 minutes and 10 seconds.

Eulálio finished three seconds ahead, but it was enough to take the yellow jersey from the defending champion, Swiss Colin Stüssi (Team Vorarlberg), who finished eighth.

After making history in Guatemalan cycling, Chumil He emphasized at a press conference: “I am very grateful to my teammates for all the work they did in the breakaway so that I could reach the end of the climb with good legs.”

Sergio was signed in August 2023 by the team Burgos BH UCI Pro Team, from Spain, but he joined their ranks at the beginning of this year, where he has signed for two seasons. Where he has already fulfilled one of his dreams, which is to win a stage as a professional cyclist.

The Tour of PortugalThe race will continue this Sunday in central Portugal with its fourth stage, which will link the towns of Sabugal and Guarda along 164.5 kilometres.
