Facial temperature variations could soon help detect diseases early using artificial intelligence (AI). Researchers at Peking University, led by Jing-Dong Jackie Han, have developed an innovative method that combinesimaging thermal and AI to analyze facial thermal patterns and predict health status and vitesse of aging individuals.

Cell Metabolism published this study which reveals that variations in temperature on certain areas of the face are linked to chronic diseases such as hypertension and diabetes. In fact, warmer cheeks can indicate a tension high blood pressure, while a warmer nose is associated with a younger “thermal age.”

To conduct this research, the scientists studied the facial temperatures of more than 2,800 Chinese participants, aged 21 to 88. Using a thermal camera and an AI model, they were able to map facial temperatures and identify significant thermal zones related to age and health. The results show that cheek and eye temperatures are strongly correlated with metabolic diseases.

The researchers also analyzed blood samples and found that increased temperatures around the eyes and cheeks are often due to increased cellular activity related to inflammation, such as repairing damaged DNA or fighting infections. Jing-Dong Jackie Han clarified that “colder noses and warmer cheeks can be telltale signs of increased arterial pressure“.

To test the impact of lifestyle habits on thermal age, the researchers asked 23 participants to jump rope 800 times a day for two weeks. This program reduced their thermal age by five years, demonstrating the beneficial effect of exercise on health.

The team now wants to test whether facial thermal imaging can predict other diseases, such as sleep disorders and cardiovascular problems. Jing-Dong Jackie Han hopes to “apply this thermal imaging in clinical settings, as it has significant potential for early diagnosis and intervention.”

This promising technology could transform medical diagnosis by offering a simple, non-invasive and rapid method to detect diseases at an early stage, thus improving the quality of life of patients.
