“Deadpool & Wolverine”: I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard [RECENZJA]

I’ll admit that when I heard about the plans for this movie, I had very mixed feelings. On the one hand, I was happy to see Hugh Jackman back as Wolverine, and in a production that had the potential to provide an original and refreshing take on the character. On the other, “Logan: Wolverine” was the perfect farewell for Wolverine on the big screen — at least from this particular actor. Why ruin it? It seemed like we were going to have a classic cash-in situation.

“Deadpool & Wolverine”: A wild ride with no holds barred

Many fans certainly had such thoughts. And the creators address them in the very first scene. Deadpool, as usual breaking the fourth wall, asks the audience: “How did we manage to resurrect Wolverine with dignity and without destroying his legacy?” The answer is very short: “No way.” After which we watch a sensational action sequence in which the main character destroys opponents while dancing to NSYNC’s hit “Bye Bye Bye.” No, there will definitely be no pathos here (well, maybe except for the ending).

The beginning of the film is a wild ride. It’s fast, brutal, spicy and incredibly funny, with the obligatory references to Disney buying out Fox and Deadpool entering the MCU. Here, the fourth wall isn’t just used for jokes – it’s jokes about the fourth wall. We get commentary on the histories of individual characters, from different studios, phases, etc., as well as the actors playing them. Although the one about Jackman’s divorce was completely unnecessary.

“Deadpool & Wolverine”: Humor Again

There’s no point in writing about the plot, because it’s… purely pretextual. Supposedly Deadpool has some goal, supposedly he needs the famous X-Man for something, supposedly it’s about saving the world, but it has absolutely no importance. Halfway through the movie you’ll forget what it’s all about. The villains are so bland and unmotivated that it’s impossible to care about them – although Matthew Macfadyen and Emma Corrin have a lot of fun with these roles. And most of the movie takes place in the Nothingness known from the Mad Max series “Loki”, which brings nothing with it except that it’s an easy tool for introducing cameo appearances. However, I have to admit that they really surprise, make an impression and are more than just a few seconds of geeky tidbits.

After all, Deadpool himself admits that even for the third film in the series, the plot development is nonexistent. But is such self-criticism enough to make it work? It turns out that it does — the production effectively defends itself with humor, humor, and more humor.

What’s not here! Pop culture references, situational jokes, slapstick, sarcasm, a bit of Monty Python, and meta-plots, i.e. “a film within a film within a film”, and all this without any filter whatsoever. Laughter could be heard in the one hundred percent filled cinema hall almost non-stop, and in some moments, if only it was brighter, you could probably see people rolling on the floor. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a very successful comedy.

“Deadpool & Wolverine”: A Treat for Superhero Movie Fans

The fight sequences are also great, successfully combining breathtaking choreography and distance – suffice it to say that blood flows here in streams, e.g. to the soundtrack of “Grease” or the epic version of “Like a Prayer” by Madonna (oh, that scene is simply divine). And there’s also Mary Puppins aka Dogpool, and as we all know, the little, super cute (although in this case also quite disgusting) dog makes you smile every time, without exception.

It must be said openly – this film is, above all, a real treat for fans of superhero cinema who have some knowledge of this world (although I guess even they don’t understand all these multiverses anymore). I am sure that such viewers will derive great pleasure from watching it.

As for the rest… It could be different. Even the joke catches your breath at some point (how long can you laugh at the same thing?) and boredom creeps in around 2/3 of the way through. The focus on Wolverine’s drama doesn’t help – because earlier it’s mentioned in just one sentence, which is why it’s not moving at all.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is a bit of a Hollywood “Bear”. Gags follow gags here, and they are successful, but there is no rhyme or reason to it. It is actually a collection of sketches. What tries to connect them is the chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman. The gentlemen have known each other for a long time, we have watched them sniping at each other many times on the internet, and you could say that rehearsals for this film began for them years ago. If there was even a little more interesting story here, we would be dealing with a “buddy movie” of the first order. It would be beautiful then.

But there’s no point in bashing the creators. I actually have to thank them. I can’t remember the last time I laughed so loudly and sincerely — not just in the cinema, but in general.
