Heavy, torrential monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in India’s western state of Maharashtra. Major areas in India’s commercial capital Mumbai and Pune have been submerged. Millions of people have been trapped in their homes.
Heavy rains in Mumbai have submerged many roads to the point where they look like rivers. The situation in the lowlands is very bad because all kinds of transportation have become impossible and there has been a shortage of food and drink.
Commercial and industrial areas in Mumbai and Pune have been closed. People have been asked not to leave their homes unnecessarily. Transporting the sick and injured to the hospital has also become extremely difficult. Roads are also damaged due to rain in many areas. People don’t know where the pit is. Many people got seriously injured by drowning in potholes while walking on the roads.
There have also been incidents of electrocution in Pune in which three people died. The Metropolitan Administration has issued a red alert in Mumbai. The Meteorological Department says this is Mumbai’s second wettest July.
