Paraguayan police cooperation led to record cocaine seizure in Barcelona port

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Spanish Civil Guard announced on Friday the seizure of 4,020 kg of cocaine in a container that left Paraguay, as part of an operation initiated by the National Police and which resulted in the confiscation of a total of 7.3 tons of the drug.

National Police Commander Carlos Benitez said at a press conference that the operation had begun nearly a year ago and that there was information that two containers of cocaine, hidden in loads of rice, were headed for Spain.

“The cargo left Paraguay with the knowledge and in cooperation with the Civil Guard. It was a joint procedure to deal a greater blow to the logistics and financial side,” he said.

One of the containers was allowed to pass through in early October for seizure in Spain, while the second was stopped at the Villeta Safe Port before its departure. In that operation on October 23, Paraguayan authorities seized 3,312 kilos of cocaine.

The cargo in Spain was estimated to have arrived between March and April. Finally, on June 27, the perpetrators appeared, were arrested and the cocaine seized, being the largest shipment seized so far in the port of Barcelona.

“We had the possibility of having the two containers here, so the operation was allowed to be much larger, allowing us to identify more elements of the criminal group,” said Commander Benítez.

In Paraguay, two people were arrested and in Spain, around eight. The investigation in our country continues into the company responsible for the cargo, based in Eusebio Ayala, and other lines of investigation.
