Athens Stock Exchange: The General Index closed on positive territory – 2024-07-28 07:58:46

The General Index closed on positive territory in Athens, despite the fact that in Europe and the USA, strong caution was observed in view of the new data on inflation in the USA.

And the General Index may not have been able to maintain 1,350 points, however it closed in positive territory, closing at 1,347.90 points, marking an increase of 0.25%, and transactions amounting to 121.13 million euros. The announcement of the data on the course of inflation in the USA probably disappointed the investors who see that the moment of lowering interest rates by the central banks is moving away.

Inflation in the US accelerated more than expected in December, while underlying price pressures continued to ease but also less than the market expected.

In particular, the US Consumer Price Index ran at an annualized 3.4% in December compared to November’s 3.1%, while the average analyst forecast expected a smaller increase of 3.2%.

The first reaction in the markets was particularly negative, which resulted in the main indices in Europe and the US moving from the positive territory they were in to negative.

It should be noted that intra-session the General Index was up to 1,354.04 points, recording an increase of 0.71% and leaving behind the high of 2023 at 1,351.68 points.

The banking index recorded gains for another session of 1.45% and stood at 1,142.79 points,

The large-cap FTSE rose 0.38% to 3,268.84, while against the day’s sentiment the mid-cap FTSEM fell 1.35% to close at 2,256.08.

The share of National Bank registered another big rise of 2.57% with transactions of a gross value of 22.7 million. Piraeus Bank strengthened by 1.45% with 14.5 million. Eurobank followed with a rise of 0.88% and a turnover of 12. 3 million and Alpha Bank had a gain of 0.47% and transactions at 9 million.

At the center of the buying movements was still GEK TERNA with an increase of 1.57% and a turnover of 4.2 million, while Lambda increased by 1.2% and Quest by 1.07%, OPAP also increased by 0.63%, while Motor Oil and PPC closed with small gains of 0.16%.

Losses for stock markets in Europe and the US. The DAX is down 0.72%, the CAC is down 0.42% and the FTSE is down 0.81%. The pan-European Stoxx 50 lost 0.42%. In the US the Dow Jones is down 0.41%, the S & P 0.49% and the Nasdaq 0.49%.

Significant gains of almost 2.5% for oil, while gold has small gains.
