Notorious drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada was “forcibly kidnapped” by the son of his former partner Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzman, according to his defense attorney. “El Chapo” son Joaquín Guzman Lopez and six men in military uniforms attacked Sinaloa, Mexico, lawyer Frank Perez said in federal court in El Paso, Texas, on Friday (local time). Zambada, near Culiacan, Asia, and forced him onto the plane.

As a result, Zambada was taken to the United States against his will. He and El Chapo’s son were arrested there. Zambada’s attorney said the incident caused Zambada to suffer back and leg problems.

Zambada appeared in court in a wheelchair for a preliminary hearing where he pleaded not guilty to the drug charges against him. Guzman Lopez’s attorney, Jeffrey Leachman, declined to comment on the kidnapping charges. The U.S. Justice Department and Mexico’s presidential office could not immediately be reached for comment.

The arrest of two leaders of one of the world’s most powerful drug cartels is a major success for U.S. authorities. Zambada is one of the largest drug traffickers in Mexican history. The relationship between El Chapo and El Chapo’s son has been tense since his father was extradited to the United States in 2017. There, “El Chapo” is serving a life sentence at a maximum-security prison in Colorado.

Joaquin Guzmán Lopez is scheduled to make his first appearance in federal court in Chicago next week to face drug trafficking and money laundering charges. Zambada is scheduled to appear in court again on Thursday.
