Perreo and festivals: Latin music steals the show in Spain this summer

Karol G’s four sold-out shows at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid are the latest example of a phenomenon that is repeated with greater intensity every summer in Spain: Latin music stealing the show.

The Colombian singer, who has brought together more than 240,000 people in one of Spain’s largest concert venues over four dates this week, joins Mexican Luis Miguel and Argentine Duki as examples of Latin artists capable of filling Real Madrid’s new stadium.

The ‘Bichota’ is also the first artist to fill the Bernabéu four times, surpassing the two full houses achieved by Luis Miguel and the American Taylor Swift, whose visit to Madrid last May was a real event.

The price to see the Colombian singer live has reached 115 euros for a basic ticket and up to 420 euros for a VIP ticket; prohibitive prices for many, but that did not prevent the tickets from selling out in a matter of hours.

Spain, a must-see stop

This unprecedented success of Karol G reveals the great interest that Latin sounds arouse among the Spanish public, especially among the younger ones, true devotees of trap, reggaeton and urban rhythms.

In 2023, nine Latin artists – Bad Bunny, Feid, Myke Towers, Rauw Alejandro, Anuel AA, Mora, Eladio Carrión, Karol G and Bizarrap – made it into the top 10 most listened to artists in Spain, according to Spotify.

Festivals such as Vive Latino, Boombastic and Reggaeton Beach Festival, which bring together artists such as Dominican Chimbala and Argentine Nicki Nicole, are aimed at their fans. According to Statista, the festivals generated more than 628 million dollars in the country last year.

As well as being a fertile ground for live music, Spain is a popular destination for international tours by Latin artists, who often make the Iberian country their only stop in Europe.

More figures

This is the case of Colombian Camilo, Puerto Rican Marc Anthony, Mexican Lila Downs and Dominican Juan Luis Guerra, who have already toured the country this summer bringing bolero, salsa, R&B and Latin pop to their European audience.

Special mention should be made of the Argentine rapper Trueno, who has been touring from city to city since July 4 with ‘El Último Baile’, on a tour that will conclude on September 6.

Another of the season’s events was ‘The Evening of the Year’, the boxing event organized by the ‘streamer’ and content creator Ibai Llanos, which featured the participation of the Mexican Julieta Venegas, the Puerto Rican Young Miko and the Argentines Paulo Londra and Bizarrap.

The Latin offering is completed by Puerto Ricans Ricky Martin, Luis Fonsi and Residente; Colombians Feid, Sebastián Yatra and Fonseca; and Dominicans Aventura, who will rock the Santiago Bernabéu on a special tour, the first since their split in 2011.
