“He returned from Iraq doubtful”.. Will Vance change his country’s policy in its wars outside the borders? (Photo)

The American newspaper wrote that when then-US Vice President Dick Cheney flew to an air base in western Iraq in late 2005, a Marine was eagerly waiting to see him.

The newspaper pointed out that this US Army corporal was James D. Hamel, a 21-year-old from Ohio who became, after nearly two decades, the Republican candidate for Cheney’s old position.

The Wall Street Journal noted that Hamel changed his name to J.D. Vance, attended Yale Law School and won a seat in the Ohio Senate before joining Republican candidate Donald Trump’s campaign. The newspaper indicated that one of the experiences that shaped his outlook on life was his service in the US Marine Corps units in Iraq.

“As he says, one of the things that has made him frustrated and disappointed is the use of American power outside the country’s borders and with regard to the politicians who launched this bloody war,” she added.

Vance’s comments came as quotes published by the WSJ from an article he published in 2020, in which he wrote: “I went to Iraq in 2005, a young idealist committed to spreading democracy and liberalism to underdeveloped countries. I returned in 2006, skeptical about the war and the ideology behind it.”

What candidate Vance is talking about reflects a change in the views of a section of Republican Party members regarding the use of armed forces abroad. Vance explained his position by saying, “The current policy has become a burden on the shoulders of ordinary Americans.”
