Alexa, with a monthly fee

Alexa, with a monthly fee

NEW YORK (EFE).—Tech giant Amazon is considering charging Alexa users a monthly fee when it launches a version of its artificial intelligence-powered voice assistant later this year, CNBC reported yesterday.

The fee will help pay for the upgrade, but the company has apparently not decided on a price yet; in any case, the new product will not be included in the $139 (about 2,316 pesos) per year Prime subscription, according to the economic portal.

Competence

With this update to its popular assistant, Amazon seeks to compete with other AI chatbots such as those from Google and OpenAI.

In 2023, Amazon announced it was working on a “smarter, more conversational Alexa, powered by generative AI.”

“It is based on a new large language model (LLM) that has been custom-built and optimized specifically for voice interactions, and the things we know our customers love: getting real-time information, smart and efficient home control, and maximizing their home entertainment,” the company said in a statement.

A first announcement

Amazon told EFE yesterday that last year, when Dave Limp was senior vice president of devices and services, he had already hinted that Alexa would become a paid service, when he told Bloomberg that “future versions of Alexa may offer enough value for customers to be willing to pay for them.”
