Disappearance of Ben: Reversal from his mother – “They know where my child is” 2024-07-27 19:01:38

Today Thursday marks 33 years since the disappearance of Ben Needham from the island of Kos. Kerry, 52, told Mirror: “I’ll spend the day trying not to relive everyone’s horror. Every day is difficult, but this is always a devastating day.”

The mother, who is currently waiting for Danish police to upload a DNA profile to the international Interpol database of a man she claims could be Ben, added. “Every time this happens, the wait is painful. It never gets easier.”

He revealed how this week he met the South Yorkshire police officer now in charge of Ben’s case, DI Matt Bolger. “I really want them to re-interview several witnesses who lied and those who refused to speak to us properly,” he said. Kerry wants them to track down a crucial witness who led the theory that Ben was killed in a car accident.

He claimed an excavator driver confessed on his deathbed that he may have killed the 21-month-old. But after he approached British officers on the island with his allegations, saying he wanted to end his mother’s pain, he later refused to give a police statement. And he also wants them to investigate police officers involved in the original investigation into Ben – several who were friends of the late digger driver.

“There are people who know where Ben is on this island. I cannot understand how they can live with themselves knowing that they could end our torture,” he said. “They can’t go to jail because the statute of limitations is 20 years, so they have nothing to lose.” Kerry’s son Ben disappeared on July 24, 1991, in Kos, when he was with his grandparents and Kerry was working at a local hotel.

South Yorkshire Police carried out two searches in Cos, the first in 2012 when a pile of dirt was searched in front of the farmhouse where Ben was last seen playing. A second dig was arranged in 2016 after the witness came forward claiming Ben had been involved in an accident behind the farmhouse.

Soil with decomposing blood was found in the area where his dead driver, known as “Dinos”, operated his machine. Kerry said an elderly witness told a British police officer he spoke to Dino the morning after Ben disappeared. He was shaking and sweating, and when he asked Dino if there had been an accident, he said, “Yes, it’s possible. I heard a howl, but I thought it was a dog.”

“There was also another confession, but it was never ascertained. We were told there was a note or a letter, but that has not been identified,” Kerry said. After two intensive searches, the police found only one toy car believed to be Ben’s. Traces of DNA from a decomposed body were found in the car, but it didn’t match Ben.
