MEXICO CITY.— This Wednesday, the Civil Society Mexicomovement that is part of the so-called Pink Tideurged the Councillors of the National Electoral Institute (INE), to safeguard democratic representation in the National Congress.
“Please fulfill your duty to ensure a fair and representative process for all citizens. It is imperative that democratic principles and the will of the people are respected, avoiding any form of manipulation that could undermine confidence in our institutions,” the statement reads.
They also expressed concern and strong rejection of what they called “attempts at over-representation” in the country’s legislative chambers.
The organization says it is “unacceptable that the new government, with 54% of the votes, intends to assign itself more than 70% of the seats in Congress.”
This move, they argue, not only contradicts Mexico’s fundamental democratic principles, but also represents a serious risk to stability and the balance of power within the country.
“INE Councillors, do not betray Mexico,” the statement urges. Civil Society Mexico demands that the duty to guarantee a fair and representative electoral process for all citizens be fulfilled, thus respecting the popular will without allowing manipulations that could undermine confidence in democratic institutions.
The organization called for citizen unity in defense of the country’s rights and democratic values.
Sociedad Civil is an organization that was part of the movement known as Marea Rosa, in which Xóchitl Gálvez, former opposition candidate, was present.
