MOPC installs sewers on access road to indigenous community in Chaco

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) has begun construction of sewers on the access road to the Xakmok Kasek indigenous community, in response to a request made during an inter-institutional meeting held in May.

The director of Rural Roads of the MOPC, Julio Ríos, stressed that the work is being carried out as part of the commitments assumed by the Paraguayan State with the indigenous communities of Chaco.

“In Xakmok Kasek, the construction of sewers at the access was requested, because there was evidence that the water was cutting through the embankment in some places,” explained Ríos.

“When we returned from that meeting, the Roads Department issued an order to build these sewers,” he explained.

The company Concretmix SA, the current contractor for the maintenance of the section of route PY09, is in charge of the execution. Ríos pointed out that these works are essential to prevent interruptions on the road during the season of heavy rains.

Commitments to Chaco communities

This intervention is part of a series of visits and commitments that the Paraguayan government is making to comply with the ruling of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) related to four communities in the Paraguayan Chaco.

Community leaders described these actions as “historic” and highlighted the willingness of President Santiago Peña’s government to carry out extensive work days on site, addressing the needs of indigenous communities in Chaco.
