‘We want an end to armed groups’: the peace march in South Waziristan

Tribal district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa South Waziristan A peace march was organized on Friday against lawlessness and extremism in the area organized by the United Political Peace Movement in Wana Tehsil.

A large number of participants including Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and Pashtun Protection Movement (PTM) workers and representatives of various political parties were present in the peace march, who raised slogans against insecurity in the region and inflation in the country. .

During the Peace March, a complete shutter down strike was conducted in Wana Bazar and the business community also participated in the Peace March.

This march was also attended by the members of the jirga consisting of the local elders formed after the Bannu Peace March, including Shah Wazir, the president of the Bannu Chamber of Commerce.

Shah Wazir told Independent Urdu that ‘Like Bannu, Waziristan Peace March also has an agenda that we will no longer tolerate lawlessness and military operations in our region.’

He said that compared to other areas of the province, the people of Waziristan have been severely affected by lawlessness and extremism and have also been displaced in military operations.

According to Shah Wazir: ‘We appeal to the state to have mercy on us as we do not have the courage to bear more hardships.’

The Pakistani army and the government of Pakistan have repeatedly said that some kind of like in the past Military operation has not been decided, but a campaign has been launched against the militants in the name of ‘Azam Satwat, during which targeted operations will be carried out.

When Shah Wazir was asked if today’s peace march and Jirga were against the targeted operation? So he replied that ‘We have always talked about ending extremism and we have to accept the policy of the state.’

He said: ‘Government should not take any action that affects the public. It is the state’s responsibility to end the rest of extremism and the state should fulfill its responsibility.

The legal community of Lower Waziristan, including the Pashtun Protection Movement, also participated in the march.

PTM Central Committee member Farman Wazir told Independent Urdu that ‘Our main demand is that we will not tolerate any kind of operation in Waziristan while we want the elimination of armed groups and individuals from Waziristan in any form.’

He said that target killing has also increased in Waziristan and we demand from the state that target killing should be stopped and action should be taken against those involved in it.

Farman Wazir said: “Some time ago Maulana Mirza Jan, the leader of Waziristan’s Jaid Alam and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam, was killed and our demands include an investigation into this murder.”

A few days ago, a sit-in was held in Bannu against the attack on the military cantonment and the military operation ‘Azam Sathwat’ to eliminate the militants.

According to the Pakistani army, 10 militants belonging to Hafiz Gul Bahadur group were killed as a result of the military operation in Bannu military cantonment since the morning of July 15, while eight security personnel were also killed in the operation.
