The offspring clings tightly to its mother’s fur and looks curiously around with its big, round eyes. But the rest of the family also curiously observes what the little one is doing.

Gorilla baby named “Jabari”

The little one now has a name too: His name is Jabari (pronounced: Dschabari). “Jabari is Swahili, an African name, and means brave,” says gorilla keeper Can Hasibe. “We chose this name because the little gorilla overcame the difficulties of the first days of his life so bravely.”

  • Impressions from the enclosure:

Jabari now spends most of his time with his mother and the rest of the gorilla family in the indoor enclosure.

“The excitement in the gorilla family has now noticeably calmed down. Kibibi enjoys being part of the group again and seeks out Awembe,” says zoo director Andreas Artmann. “The gorilla family goes out together to look for food or often lies comfortably together as a group, chilling out.”

The time has now come to allow visitors to take their first cautious look at the little one, always under the supervision of a zookeeper.

The zookeeper’s job is not only to ensure peace and order, but also to report exciting facts about the turbulent life of the new zoo resident, how he spent his first few days and how family life works.
