The House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (DPR RI) will host the Second Session of the Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership (IPPP) in Senayan, Central Jakarta on 25-26 July 2024. The theme is ‘Partnership for Prosperity: Fostering Regional Connectivity and Inclusive Development’.

“We actually feel grateful because after 6 years, the Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership Forum can be held or organized again. Because the last time it was held was in 2018,” said Deputy Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Putu Supadma Rudana in Jakarta quoted on Friday (26/7).

Putu explained that he supports the government to continue conducting diplomacy with Pacific countries, so that in the future Indonesia and the Pacific Island Countries will have mutual respect or both respect and appreciate each other.

Putu hopes that in the future this Engagement (interaction) must be accelerated and improved again, not only discussing issues related to the conditions and challenges that occur, but more productively in improving connectivity, increasing support for infrastructure development.

“How we should continue to support each other and improve cooperation in the areas of investment, economic growth, infrastructure, trade, energy transition, tourism, and education. Which in the end will provide benefits and growth between countries, so that people get welfare,” said the Member of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) for Sustainable Development.

Putu said that it is hoped that the meeting forum attended by 13 countries, including Indonesia and 1 French territorial country, can rebuild togetherness between Indonesia and the Pacific Island Countries, building a good relationship.

“They can see the various developments that we have achieved in Indonesia, especially in Jakarta. They understand that development in Indonesia is also built inclusively and evenly throughout Indonesia, not only in western Indonesia but also to the eastern tip,” he explained.

Therefore, Putu continued, Parliament always supports the first track diplomacy carried out by the government. Meanwhile, parliament continues to carry out second track diplomacy to continue to maintain good relations with the Pacific islands.

“This is to build good relations between Indonesia and countries in the Pacific Islands. The parliament here has a commitment to support and assist the first track diplomacy carried out by the government,” he said.

With the presence of this second forum, Putu hopes that there will be an acceleration carried out by Pacific countries and Indonesia. In the sense, he said, this forum does not only discuss traditional issues such as those related to borders.

“But furthermore, how to increase trade, increase investment in the country, and increase people-to-people cooperation, or even contribute to increasing capacity building,” said the legislator from Bali.

As Deputy Chair of the BKSAP DPR RI, Putu wants to ensure that there is one affirmation carried out by the government and the DPR RI’s task of supervising the government. That Pacific countries deserve to be given support or support both in terms of capacity building.

“We have to be involved in investment in the country, and ultimately we have to be able to ensure that what we do makes a real contribution to the people of the Pacific countries. So, the parliament here is committed to helping the first track diplomacy carried out by the government,” he said.

On the other hand, Putu also wants to ensure the relationship between people to people and how to jointly monitor the issue of climate change. Because, it is known that the impact of the issue of climate change is also felt by the Pacific community.

“One of them is related to the sea, namely how the increase in sea level is also felt due to the increase in the earth’s temperature or global warming,” said this member of Commission VI of the Indonesian House of Representatives.

In addition, Putu said that in the Indonesia-Pacific Parliamentary Partnership forum meeting, connectivity will be discussed to be improved again because it is really needed by Pacific countries. So far, he continued, they have indeed been very rare in air connectivity, direct relations with Indonesia.

“This connectivity must be further expanded by involving both state airlines or private airlines, to be able to reach the Pacific region or other Pacific countries. Because this affirmation is very important to ensure that our support is also for Pacific countries so that they also give high respect,” he concluded. (Z-8)
