Humble Games lays off all staff to restructure

As part of the ongoing wave of layoffs that has hit the video game industry so far in 2024, Humble Games joins the studios affected by mass layoffs.

Humble Games is the publishing division of San Francisco, California-based Humble Bundle, which was acquired in 2017 by Ziff Davis through its subsidiary IGN Entertainment and has published over 20 titles since 2019, including Forager, Wizard of Legend, Slay the Spire, and TemTem.

The affected employees announced their dismissals on LinkedIn and other social media. One of them was Nicola Kwan, who was part of the company’s business development team. “At 9am today, 36 Humble Games employees were told that we were being made redundant and that the company was closing,” she said.

Humble Games won’t close despite layoffs

Shortly after the layoffs were announced, Humble Games posted a statement explaining that the layoffs are due to the restructuring of its operations, not its total closure.

“In these challenging economic times for independent game publishing, Humble Games has made the difficult but necessary decision to restructure our operations. This decision was not made lightly; it involved much deliberation and careful thought, with the goal of ensuring stability and support for our developers and ongoing projects.

“Additionally, the restructuring of Humble Games’ operations will have no impact on Humble Bundle’s operations. We are fully aware of the profound impact this decision has on our team members at Humble Games and we deeply empathize with everyone affected,” he continued.

“Our team’s contributions have been top-notch and invaluable, supporting the launch of our games since we began publishing in 2017. We are committed to navigating this transition with as much empathy and understanding as possible.”

“Supporting our development partners and helping former team members remains our top priority. We are committed to making this transition as smooth as possible for everyone involved.”

“Thank you for your support and compassion during this difficult time. We deeply appreciate it.”

Upcoming titles from Humble Games include Never Alone 2, Monaco 2, Wizard of Legend 2, and Lost Skies. The publishing process for these aforementioned games is currently unknown.
