Renzi and the left’s admission tests to be part of the broad field –

The feasibility of the path, still narrow at the moment, that brings Matteo Renzi back into the perimeter of the center-left will be verified in Parliament. Among the Dems the issue is a topic of discussion, in the secret meetings of the Palace as well as in the chats of the political areas – increasingly ‘crumbled’ – of the Dem galaxy. There are few certainties. One of these is that the wide or very wide field must be built if one wants to have a chance of victory over the right. And on this “we are still a dear friend”, say parliamentary sources of the Democratic Party. The second certainty of the Dem leaders is that the Democratic Party is central. In other words, Schlein and his men have the burden of holding together the opposition forces around issues that, in the future, will form the program of the coalition to come. The other certainty, almost a mantra these days, is that “you don’t put vetoes and you don’t accept them from the outside”. A formula that has opened the way for the center-left to the leader of Italia Viva.

Despite this, the knots are still all on the table and another photograph will not unravel them. “Parliament will take care of it,” says a Democratic source. The behavior of the individual political forces in parliament will tell whether a broad coalition is possible. Some very first indications, it is emphasized, have already arrived in recent weeks. The battle over prisons, yesterday in the Senate, saw the opposition march together. Then there is the mobilization for the collection of signatures against Autonomy. And there are the administrative elections that saw the center-left present itself united and win in many municipalities. The next test will be the regional elections in the fall, when there will be voting in Emilia-Romagna, Umbria and – if Toti resigns – also in Liguria. If the center-left plus Renzi were to present itself united and win, the road would be clear. In the meantime, the various souls of the Democratic Party continue to observe the moves of the former scrapper and to question the reason for the change of heart of the IV leader.

What is driving Renzi to accelerate on the road to coalition is, as he himself explains, the state of fibrillation of the executive that leads him to say «early elections are no longer a taboo. There is a settling of scores underway in the majority that could give birth to something new on the right. But if they break, we must avoid technical or parliamentary governments and go to elections». And if Giuseppe Conte and the M5s give a stop, Renzi responds: «If the season of vetoes is over, it is over both incoming and outgoing. If Conte wants to talk about the past, let’s discuss it. He blames me for having brought down his government. But I do not deny having brought Draghi to Palazzo Chigi. I do not think it is in his interest to open this debate: I did not sign the Salvini decrees on immigration, I have never defined myself as a sovereignist, I have never supported Trump», Renzi relaunches. However, Conte is not the only one holding back. Among the reformists, there are those who wonder what the future role of that area will be when the ‘reformist center’ is externalized. And to the former Article One members, Renzi’s initiative still appears to be a unilateral one. The secretary’s line remains that of not vetoing anyone and not accepting any. A line that, if we look at the Democratic parliamentarians, seems to enjoy almost unanimous support. In short, the photograph with the embrace between Schlein and Renzi is not enough to make an alliance concrete.
