UN Security Council to discuss Essequibo Law

A meeting is scheduled for Tuesday by members of the Security Council of the HIMwho will discuss the Essequibo Law approved by the National Assembly (AN) in 2020 and which has caused rejection on the part of Guyana.

The meeting on April 9 was at the request of the President of Guyana, Arfaan Ali, to address the “violation of the rules of international law”, as explained by the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of that country, Robert Persaud.

The official added that the discussion will be held under the context of the International Court of Justice’s order prohibiting Venezuela from taking any action that interferes with Guyana’s administration of the Essequibo.

“Fundamentally, the UN Security Council is the main body to discuss Venezuela’s violations as a member of the international communityadded Guyana’s Foreign Minister Hugh Todd.

It is expected that after the debate, the UN issues a statement on the issue.

From Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro assured that the dispute with Guyana, sooner rather than later, must be resolved through negotiation.

In past days, he Foreign Minister Yván Gil shared the statement in which it was noted that “The approval of the aforementioned law is a sovereign act, which concerns only Venezuelans and its objective is to defend and preserve the unquestionable rights of Venezuela over the territory of Essequibo Guayana”.
