PT Medco Energi Internasional Tbk (MedcoEnergi) has adopted solar panels as a clean energy source in its operational areas as an effort to reduce carbon emissions, while also utilizing the large solar energy potential in Indonesia.

“Thus, MedcoEnergi has gradually integrated renewable solutions into operational practices, reducing dependence on fossil energy sources and supporting global efforts to address climate change,” said MedcoEnergi Chief Operating Officer Ronald Gunawan, in Jakarta, in his statement Monday (22/7).

MedcoEnergi previously operated using conventional energy, gas and diesel fuel. In order to reduce the use of such energy, the company adopted clean energy technology as a solution in its operational activities.

The company has also installed a number of solar panel systems to meet the electricity needs for operations. From the facilities in onshore (land) to installation offshore (offshore), solar panels have become an integral part of MedcoEnergi’s infrastructure.

At the facility onshore. solar panels are installed in open fields to optimize the absorption of sunlight, as well as in street lighting systems in the operating area. Meanwhile, in offshore, solar panel installation on offshore platforms is the main choice. In shorebase, Solar panels are also installed on the roof to utilize the available space.

Ronald revealed that by the end of 2023, the installation of solar panels had been carried out at 18 upstream oil and gas operations locations at the facilities. onshore and also offshore with a total capacity of 422 kWp.

“This utilization has not only succeeded in reducing GHG emissions by 1,597 tons of CO2e per year, but also reduced the use of fossil fuels,” he said.

According to Ronald, the move towards using solar energy not only creates benefits for the environment, but also economic benefits for companies. By reducing long-term operational costs through reducing the use of fossil fuels, companies can optimize resources more efficiently.

In addition, he said again, this step can also strengthen relations with stakeholders who are increasingly demanding real action in reducing the impact of climate change.

“Thus, this step not only provides economic benefits, but also creates a better reputation amidst global demands to reduce GHG emissions,” said Ronald.

Ronald said MedcoEnergi has plans to expand its use of solar energy in the future. The company continues to evaluate the possibility of installing solar panels in its other upstream oil and gas operations.

“In order to reduce GHG emissions, MedcoEnergi through all of its upstream oil and gas subsidiaries in various operational areas, has taken the initiative to switch stationary combustion to electricity from the PLN network and renewable energy sources, such as the use of solar panels,” he said.

By 2023, MedcoEnergi has managed to reduce more than 26,000 tons of CO2 per year in its various operational areas. This was achieved through the use of solar panels with a total capacity of 422 kWp, as well as switching to electricity from the PLN network of 487.5 kW.

These various initiatives are real actions in the framework of implementing MedcoEnergi’s Climate Change and Energy Transition Strategy which has been running since 2021 as part of the company’s Sustainability Roadmap which was initiated in 2017. MedcoEnergi’s aspiration through this strategy is to achieve Net Zero Emission coverage 1 and 2 in 2050 and coverage 3 in 2060. (Ant/N-2)
