The aircraft manufacturer will plead guilty in the case surrounding the crashes of two Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in Indonesia in 2018 and Ethiopia in 2019, which killed a total of 346 people. This is stipulated in an agreement with the US Department of Justice.
Boeing has agreed to pay a fine of $243.6 million in a settlement. Boeing has already had to pay a fine of this amount in the past. The current agreement also includes Boeing investing at least $455 million in “compliance and safety programs.” The settlement still has to be approved by a federal judge.
The US Department of Justice announced in May that Boeing could be prosecuted again for the crashes. Boeing is under great pressure due to allegations of safety defects in its aircraft. An incident in January 2024 caused particular attention when a cabin door cover fell off an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 during flight. The plane had to make an emergency landing.
