Dominican airline Sky High imposes obstacles to Cuban travelers for stopovers 2024-07-26 03:25:58

The Dominican press reported on Tuesday that the Dominican airline, Sky High, is imposing obstacles for Cubans to make stops at the Santo Domingo Airport and then continue on to Nicaragua, at the start of the Central American route to the southern United States.

Hundreds of Cubans seeking to reach Nicaragua via the Dominican Republic are stranded in Havana due to new restrictions imposed by airlines and immigration authorities, according to the Dominican magazine Arecoa.

In addition to the visa requirement imposed by Colombian airline Wingo, there are now restrictions imposed by SKY High Dominicana since July 11. The latter airline does not allow Cubans with Nicaragua as their final destination to board, even if they have the necessary documentation to enter the Dominican Republic.

Those affected claim that the airlines have informed them that they cannot fly on the instructions of Avianca, the Colombian airline with which they have connections to Nicaragua. However, Avianca has not issued any official communication in this regard.

More obstacles for Cubans now due to Dominican airline

The situation is further aggravated by the high cost of direct flights to Nicaragua. Only the Venezuelan company Conviasa offers direct flights from Havana, with prices exceeding $4,000 per traveller for September. The other option is to turn to private sellers, who have lower prices but can scam you.

According to the press report, the affected Cubans have made complaints to both the airlines and the embassies of Colombia and the Dominican Republic, without obtaining solutions.

“In my case, we bought eight tickets, I sold everything I had in my house and my uncle sold his house to buy two tickets and now he lives with us, he is even left without clothes. All the claims to let us travel are useless. They only tell us that we can change the date of the trip up to a year from now,” said one of those affected.

Most of them have lost the money for their tickets and are in a desperate situation. Every day there are more obstacles for Cubans who want to emigrate on their own, like this one now from the Dominican airline.
