Davide Soliani, creator of Mario + Rabbids from Ubisoft

One of the least expected crossovers in the video game industry was Mario + Rabbids, a turn-based game from Ubisoft in collaboration with Nintendo that surprised everyone when it arrived on Switch in 2017. This game marked an iconic moment during the aforementioned E3, when Davide Soliani, the game’s creative director, was seen crying with pride while Shigeru Miyamoto himself spoke about the game.

Sadly, 7 years after the release of the first game, Soliani has made the decision to leave Ubisoft.

Announcing the newson social networksThe creative director said he had decided to “embark on a new adventure,” but did not share details of his next professional step.

“Hello everyone. After 25 years, 11 of which were wonderfully spent working with Nintendo on Mario + Rabbids alongside our amazing community of players, I have decided to leave Ubisoft to embark on a new adventure,” he wrote. “I can’t say more now. Thank you so much for everything, really.”

Mario + Rabbids sequel didn’t sell as well as Ubisoft expected

Despite the first game in the franchise, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, reaching 10 million players since 2017, its sequel, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, managed to sell just 3 million copies after its release in 2022.

Despite positive reviews, Sparks of Hope initially disappointed commercially during its October 2022 release window, with Ubisoft stating it was “surprised” by its poor performance during the final weeks of that year.
