Borrell: Palestinian unity must be supported

BRUSSELS – The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said that the agreement reached between Palestinian factions in China is “important news and the process of unity among the Palestinians must be supported.”

This came in his speech during a session on Israel and Palestine organized by the European Council on Foreign Relations in Brussels.

Borrell added that “the price of the 9-month-old war in Gaza is high.”

He added: “All we see is a race towards extremism and the fact that although everyone is talking about the Middle East today, a political solution is still much further away.”

Borrell said the agreement reached between Palestinian factions in China was “important news.”

He added, “I think unity among the Palestinians is a good thing, and we must support the process of unity among them.”

Following the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion, which stated that Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal and must end immediately, Borrell stressed that European officials “must understand what this decision means, and take appropriate steps.”

Borrell pointed out that Europeans should be the first to take steps in this regard, explaining: “Because this is our historical responsibility. We have a historical responsibility in creating the roots of this conflict and we must accept it.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Palestinian factions had agreed to form an “interim national reconciliation” government focused on governing the Gaza Strip after the war.

On Monday, the Palestinian factions announced their agreement to reach a “comprehensive national unity” that includes all forces within the framework of the PLO and to form an interim national consensus government, in a statement issued at the conclusion of a national meeting held by 14 Palestinian factions in Beijing, at the official invitation of China.

The factions that participated in the meeting were: Fatah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, the Palestinian People’s Party, the Palestinian Popular Struggle Front, and the Palestinian National Initiative Movement.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command, the Palestinian Democratic Union (FIDA), the Palestine Liberation Front, the Arab Liberation Front, the Palestinian Arab Front, and the Vanguard of the Popular Liberation War (Sa’iqa Forces) also participated.
