The government representative, Pavlos Marinakis, he referred to the different treatment of fires in the country in recent years.
Initially, Mr. Marinakis focused on the actions of the government in the last five years in terms of preventing and dealing with fires, mainly the establishment of 112 for the protection of human life.
“This is what a state is all about: to take lessons from the past and turn these lessons into actions. I think there is a difference from summer to summer, of course we have to keep our heads down, especially when we are addressing people who have lost their property and most probably their relatives”.
At the same time, the government representative spoke about the tightening of the criminal code, with the punishments now being heavier even for negligent arson. “Besides, from a point onward when you know that there is an extreme risk of fire, it is not so much negligence”, as he underlined, adding that there is now also the imposition of penalties, without these being “virtual” anymore.
He also assured that the government will thoroughly examine the issue of intervention in the Esfimenou Monastery on Mount Athos.
