Colombian President Gustavo Petro signed into law the ‘No more olé’ law on Monday, which bans bullfighting in the country.
The legal text establishes a three-year transition period to design an economic reconversion programme for those affected, which will come into effect in 2027.
“This project has had a number of enemies, powerful opponents, very powerful ones, who have slowed down its development time and again,” said the head of state.
The signing of the new law took place in the Bogotá bullring of La Santamaría, which will be transformed into a space for culture, art and sports, among others.
Petro says that this law is to advance in the defense of life
In addition to bullfights, bullfights with rejoneo, bullfights with young bulls, bullfights with young bulls and bullfights with bulls were also banned.
Petro said that the law is another step towards advancing the defense of life, one of his government’s flagships, which he relates to the changes that must be made in countries to confront climate change.
From bullrings to cultural venues
Before the anti-bullfighting law was signed, several musical groups performed at the Santamaría to reaffirm that the stage was used for artistic expressions.
For his part, the mayor of Bogotá, Carlos Fernando Galán, said that his administration will begin a process of transformation of the bullring.
Popular bullfights in Colombia have been losing followers and currently only take place in the Cañaveralejo bullring in Cali and in the Manizales Bullring.
