Former Argentine President Alberto Fernández (2019-2023) announced that he will travel to Venezuela to act as an international observer in the elections to be held on July 28 and urged the president of that country, Nicolás Maduro, to accept defeat in the event of an unfavorable result.

“I’m going to do what they asked me to do, which is to be an observer in an election and see that everything works well,” Fernández said during an interview on the Argentine radio station Radio con Vos.

The former Peronist leader also mentioned that he was summoned together with the former president of the Government of Spain José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero (2004-2011) and explained that he would travel this Wednesday.

Goals

“I am leaving so that I can speak with the opposition and hear their concerns first, to see if there are any concerns that I can help correct. I want to correct them, because what I want is for there to be a transparent election,” Fernandez added.

He also referred to the request of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who yesterday urged Maduro to “respect the democratic process.”

“If he is defeated, what he has to do is accept it. As Lula said, the winner wins, and the loser loses. That’s it, it’s over, that’s democracy,” said the former Argentine president, who also stressed that “what Venezuela needs is to recover its democratic coexistence and allow those who are wandering around the world, because they left their country for whatever reason, to return.”

From his position as president of Argentina and as pro tempore leader (2022-2023) of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), Fernández advocated for dialogue between the Venezuelan government and the opposition. He participated in rounds of contact alongside his then counterparts from France, Emmanuel Macron, and from Colombia, Gustavo Petro.
