Mayor of Itagüí elected President of the Colombian Association of Intermediate Cities (Asointermedias)

At the extraordinary general assembly of Asointermedias, held this Wednesday, July 24 in the city of Bogotá, and with the presence of the heads of the Interior, Housing and Defense ministries, Juan Fernando Cristo, Helga María Rivas and Iván Velásquez respectively; the board of directors of this associative entity was elected.

The mayor of Itagüí (Antioquia), Diego Torres Sánchez, will be the president and representative of the mayors before the national government, the Congress of the Republic and other national and international organizations; the vice president will be the mayor of Istmina (Chocó), Jaison Mosquera; and the mayor of Girardot (Cundinamarca), Salomón Said Arias, will act as secretary.

“I appreciate the trust of all the mayors, but this is a recognition of a city process, because Itagüí has ​​been transformed and is now a national benchmark in security, education, culture, sports and economic development. The voice of the intermediate cities, which are the ones that move a large part of the country’s economy, will be heard and will have weight in the decisions that affect the millions of inhabitants that we represent,” said the mayor of Itagüí, Torres Sánchez.

According to Asointermedias, there are 89 intermediate cities in the country, where there are more than 10 million inhabitants and 25% of the national GDP is concentrated; today, nearly 50% of them are unionized or in the process of doing so. “That is the importance of these spaces with the national government, to manage projects with citizen impact and in the next legislature we will present the Law of Intermediate Cities that will allow them autonomy and to be in the political administrative organization of the country,” said the executive director of this entity, Santiago Ospina.

Asointermedias is an associative entity of municipalities that brings together 40 Colombian cities with similar characteristics, populations of more than 100,000 inhabitants and first or second category. It was established in 2022 to strengthen territorial management capacity and dialogue with the national government, the Congress of the Republic and other national and international organizations.
