July 20th marks one of the most significant and endearing holidays on the calendar: Friendship Day. This date, which has gained popularity in Mexico and different Latin American countries, invites us to reflect on those special bonds that we choose to form, those that are built with laughter, tears, secrets and, above all, with a genuine affection that transcends time and distance.

Friendship Day has its roots in an initiative by Argentine Enrique Ernesto Febbraro, who, inspired by the arrival of man on the Moon in 1969, saw in this milestone a symbol of unity and hope for all humanity. Febbraro sent thousands of letters to different countries, proposing July 20 as a day to celebrate friendship; his idea found an echo, and thus was born this beautiful tradition that is today celebrated in many corners of the world.

In our digital age, where virtual connections are commonplace, Friendship Day takes on a special dimension. Whether through a phone call, a text message, a video call or, better yet, a face-to-face meeting, this day gives us the opportunity to express to our friends how much they mean to us.

There is no single way to celebrate this iconic day on the calendar. Some choose to exchange gifts, others prefer to gather together to share a meal, and many simply hug each other and say “thank you.” However, what is important at the end of the day is the gesture, the act of remembering and honoring those people who accompany us on the journey of life.

However, humor and creativity are also part of the Mexican lexicon and that is why MEMES alluding to romantic festivities have not been lacking on social media.

Now memes and sarcastic comments are the modern way for many to congratulate their loved ones. While aunts send memes of Tweety Bird with roses and glitter, younger people send cards with dirty jokes and references to pop culture.

On this Saturday, July 20, take a moment to reflect on your friendships. Think about those friends who have been with you through thick and thin, and ask yourself how you can be a better friend to them. Maybe it’s time to reconnect with someone you haven’t seen in a while, or to further strengthen the bonds with your closest friends.

The International Day of Friendship, established on July 30, 2011 by the United Nations General Assembly, is approaching. This date focuses on promoting friendship between peoples, countries and cultures.

The goal, according to the UN, is to create ties that promote peace initiatives and global understanding. The resolution that established this celebration seeks to unite humanity by overcoming barriers and differences.

Since its declaration, various countries and organizations have launched campaigns and special events to emphasize the importance of friendship in creating a more peaceful and harmonious world. The United Nations General Assembly emphasizes that friendship between different communities can significantly contribute to social cohesion.
