The Moroccan national team beat Argentina 2-1 on Wednesday in an atypical and controversial football match on the first day of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
The match ended 2-2 after Moroccan fans invaded the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard pitch. Some fans also threw firecrackers at the South American players, after La Albiceleste scored the equaliser in the last minute of 15 minutes of injury time.
A rarity
However, almost two hours after the final whistle, referee Glenn Nyberg ordered the match to be restarted because Argentina’s goal was illegal. After reviewing the VAR, the referee said that there was an offside position in the play prior to the goal and that was why the goal was invalidated.
Both teams had to return to the field and three minutes were played. During that time, Morocco was able to hold on to the result and earned the three points against Argentina, led by Javier Mascherano, who expressed his complaint and dissatisfaction with everything that had happened, in addition to reporting other situations such as a robbery at the training camp on Tuesday, July 23.
Goals
Soufiane Rahimi put the Africans ahead in the 45+2′. He then converted a penalty to complete his brace and put the score at 2-0 in favour of his team.
At 68′ Giuliano Simeone scored for the Olympic Albiceleste and in the 90+15′ Christian Medina had made it 2-2 after a play that included four previous shots. However, the goal was disallowed and the final result was 2-1.
