On October 14, 1773, the educational institution of the Republic of the Two Peoples established in Vilnius is considered the first ministry of education in Europe and one of the first such institutions in the world. She undertook the work of creating the education system, from the parochial school to the university.

The educational commission launched an innovative idea – universally compulsory education for children of all castes. The Commission introduced the teaching of natural and exact sciences, combined the elements of general education with the practical training of agricultural and craft skills, and replaced Latin with the mother tongue. One of the first in Europe to take care of physical education at school – introduced physical education.
