Nepal: Plane crashes, only pilot survives

Nepal A small plane crashed on take-off from the capital Kathmandu on Wednesday, killing 18 people on board.

Nepali officials said the plane was carrying two crew members and 17 technicians who were on their way to the city of Pokhara to repair another plane.

Tej Bahadur Podyal, a spokesman for Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, told Reuters news agency: ‘Only the captain of the ill-fated plane survived the crash and is being treated in hospital.’

Video footage released after the crash showed firefighters trying to put out the blaze as thick black smoke billowed into the sky.

Some of the footage also shows the plane flying slightly above the runway and then swerving towards the ground before crashing.

After the crash, rescue workers can also be seen throwing water on the burnt wreckage of the plane spread over the fields.

Officials said the plane was being operated by local Surya Airlines. Officials added that the airport was temporarily closed after the accident.

According to FlightRadar24, a global aircraft tracking organization, Surya Airlines operates two Bombardier CRJ-200 jets in Nepal for domestic flights and both the aircraft are about 20 years old.

Nepal has been criticized for its poor air safety record, and nearly 350 people have lost their lives in air accidents since 2000 in the Himalayan foothills.

The deadliest incident in Nepal’s history occurred in 1992 when a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane crashed into a hill before landing near Kathmandu, killing 167 people.
