On Monday morning, the Minister of the General Secretariat of Government (Segegob), Camila Vallejo, spoke out about the tragic murder of four teenagers in Quilicura over the weekend, stressing the urgency of implementing effective measures to combat the growing violence in the country.

“We want to begin this speech with an event that we deeply regret. Last weekend we experienced an extremely violent and painful event for our country, and mainly for the families involved, where the lives of minors, four minors, were ended,” said Minister Vallejo at the beginning of her speech.

The Secretary of State detailed the actions that the Executive is implementing to address this type of crime, highlighting the work of the brigades of the Organized Crime and Homicide Prosecutor’s Office (ECOH) and the reinforcement of gun control. “We are taking decisive action to confront these violent acts that unfortunately end in homicides against minors,” she said.

In her speech, Minister Vallejo called on the community to get involved in reporting illegal weapons through the 4242 Hotline, highlighting the importance of citizen collaboration in the fight against crime. The Minister emphasized that citizen participation is crucial to identifying and removing illegal weapons from the streets, thus contributing to the prevention of future acts of violence.

When questioned about the perception of security in the country, Minister Vallejo acknowledged the existing challenges, but stated that Chile is not yet at the level of insecurity of other neighboring countries. “We still have time to take action to stop this situation,” she stated, stressing the need for more robust and coordinated actions.

Regarding the investigations into the triple homicide in Quilicura, Minister Vallejo reported that the Undersecretary and current Deputy Minister of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, is leading a police committee to address the case and follow up with Carabineros. This committee is focused on clarifying the facts and bringing those responsible to justice.
